Matthew Vadum: What Does the ‘A’ Really Stand For?
In 1917, Roger Baldwin, founder of the ACLU, wrote in a letter on political strategy to journalist Louis Lochner…
“Do steer away from making it look like a Socialist enterprise… We want to look like patriots in everything we do. We want to get a lot of flags, talk a good deal about the Constitution and what our forefathers wanted to make of this country, and show that we are really the folks that really stand for the spirit of our institutions.”
In a 1934 article, Baldwin wrote “dictatorship” would be necessary “while the job of reorganizing society on a socialist basis is being done.”
These are just a couple of quotes from Capital Research Center Senior Editor Matthew Vadum’s Townhall Magazine article about the ACLU.
